Three for the price of one. A cable car, a fairytale castle and the Western World’s largest Buddhist temple are among the surprises of Benalmádena, a town with a tripolar personality. The three distinct neighbourhoods that make up Benalmádena – Pueblo, Arroyo de la Miel and Costa – can keep even the most picky holidaymaker coming back for more. A veritable town of entertainment there is definitely more within its boundaries for the tourist than practically any other resort in Spain.
Benalmádena-Costa has many wide sandy beaches with cosy chiringuitos and shallow waters, perfect for swimming, paddling or surfing. Golf, wellness- and sports centers with tennis and padel courts all in close proximity. The award-winning harbour of Benalmádena, Puerto Marina, is home to good shops, cafes and restaurants, whilst the nearby traditional Pueblos Blancos (white washed villages) of Benalmádena Pueblo and Mijas Pueblo or the beautiful, bustling city of Málaga make a perfect destination for a day out away from the beach.
Benalmádena’s cuisine is wide and varied with restaurants offering cuisine typical of the area, with lots of seafood and rice on the menu, to anything and everything you could possibly wish for. There are a great number of tapas bars, restaurants and cáfes in Benalmádena. Some more traditional bars will often give you a small amount of tapas for free with a caña (small beer). Benalmádena Costa's situation by the seaside affords it the pleasure of being home to Chiringuitos (beach bars) and ocean front dining options.
One of the jewels of the Costa del Sol is the beautiful little village of Mijas Pueblo, which nestles gently in the mountainside at 400 meters above sea level about 7km from the coast keeping the typical charm of the white Andalusian villages. The beautiful picture of endless white houses climbing up the slopes of the Sierra de Mijas, in contrast to the deep green of the pines, offers one of the most recognizable and picturesque images of Andalucia.
There are so many things to do in and around Mijas: enjoy the flamenco shows, visit the miniatures museum, roam the art galleries or street market, book a city tour by electric tuk tuk, explore the gardens of the castle walls, splash the water park, play golf or go hiking the network of self-guided trails covering the Southern slope of the Sierra de Mijas. Parking your car in Mijas is really easy in the multi storey 24h garage down town Pueblo at a very visitor friendly rate of 1 Euro per day.
Mijas Pueblo´s bars and restaurants feature both national and international cuisine. If you want to try a local traditional dish order salmorejo (a cold puree of tomatoes, oil and garlic served with toasted bread). A true gastronomic point of reference is Restaurante El Mirlo Blanco, famous for Basque cuisine and its clientele has included former Presidents and Prime Ministers. Restaurant Secret Garden offers great steaks and fish from the barbecue in their very romantic hidden garden. Alboka Gastro serves delicious fusion tapas and home made cocktails.
